Section III – Written Essay Contest Rules
- Each entry must have a title page containing: writer’s name, phone number*, email address*, number of words, date of birth, major, and year in college.
*Information important for contacting winners. - Essays must be typed, double-spaced and written in English.
- Essays must contain no less than 1,000 words and no more than 1,500 words. Every word of the essay is counted.
This does not include bibliography, footnotes identifying non-original material or title and author information. - Each page of the essay must be numbered, starting with the first page of the essay, not the title page. The numbers must be on the upper-right hand corner of each page.
There should be no last name next to the page number. Judges will review essays "blindly." - Any quotation or copyrighted materials used in the essay must be properly identified using a bibliography and footnotes or proper citation.
Failure to identify non-original material will result in disqualification. - No reference can be made in the essay that will identify the contestant beyond the listing of the name on the title page.
Names on other pages will result in penalties and possible disqualification. - Essays must be submitted as a PDF via email to [email protected] no later than 8:00 AM, Friday, March 16, 2018.
- Winning essays will be presented at the 2018 Conference on Island Sustainability on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at the Hyatt Regency Guam.
Winners will be contacted on by Thursday, March 22, 2018. - Any protest must be made immediately. The Essay Contest committee will decide all protests in conformity with the contest rules.
- The decision of the contest committee is final and no higher appeals will be recognized.
- Failure to adhere to the rules may result in disqualification at the discretion of the Contest Committee.
- All dates and times are subject to change.
Section V – Scoring of Written Essay Contest
- Material Organization (logical interpretation of the subject, adherence to topic): 50 points
- Vocabulary and Style (phrasing and continuity): 30 points
- Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling: 20 points
